- Official FAQ for Alt.Astronomy -
Q: What is this newsgroup, alt.astronomy?
Currently, alt.astronomy does have some astronomy-related threads, and a few professional astronomers lurk and occasionally post. There is very little posted about traditional astronomy topics such as telescopes and sky observation, however. OTOH, the newsgroup is inhabited by a loose-knit group of posters who consider it "theirs" to use anyway they see fit. Many of these posters apparently migrated from alt.sci.physics.new-theories (the title of this newsgroup should not be overlooked) for unknown reasons, but excuses such as "alt.astronomy was dead" have been given.
Typical threads in alt.astronomy include subjects such as:

Q: What is a "saucerhead"?
A derogatory term for an unidentified flying object (UFO) enthusiast. In the context of alt.astronomy, however, it has come to refer to the group of posters mentioned above, not all of whom necessarily subscribe to the usual extraterrestrial (ET) claims normally associated with the subject of UFOs.
Q: Who is "nightbat", and why are his posts so fscking weird?
The "nightbat" (aka "frootbat") is the leader and Captain of the saucerheads, which he terms the "profound elite Earth Space Science Officers." He resides at "Indy Base 1", and waits patiently for the intergalactic rescue to occur. In the meantime, nightbat posts a number of highly dubious claims to usenet again and again. One of his favorites is that black holes are a "sci-fi" fantasy of mainstream science, which should be replaced his profound " Black Comet " (the quote positioning is his) "theory". This theory has something to do with "reciprocal fields", and that the images captured by the Deep Impact spacecraft of comet Temple 1 confirm his ideas. He believes he should receive a Nobel prize for this claim.
The nightbat is so proud of his junior-grade officers that he actually had a bunch of t-shirts and baseball caps printed at personal expense, and shipped to the other saucerheads. It is claimed that when worn in public, these items of clothing are so irresistable that any human female will invariably be attracted to the wearer.
As for Part II of this question, who knows what the answer is!!?!?!?

Q: Who is Darla?
A subgroup of alt.astronomy posting entities, including:
"Darla"
"Dr. Why"
"Silouen"
"Yubiwan"
"Dr. Yubiwan"There are two opposing views about who "Darla" is. The first, that they are a species of sea mammals who have evolved for many millions of years to become a race called the "Seans" who are capable of intergalactic space travel. In between these journeys a few of their number spends time in blocks of a few months to prepare "Earthians" for "Official First Contact" (OFC) by posting to Usenet. They greatly fear that OFC will cause humans to commit mass suicide, thus they cannot show themselves (except on alt.astronomy) yet. They promise to rescue all the profound elite Earth Space Science Officers from all their problems. Apparently, one of their large motherships has been named the "nightbat".
The second view is that these are sockpuppets of a single person who is either completely delusional, or who has been trolling the saucerheads hard for several years running.
A couple examples of Darla posts:

Q: Who is Silouen, and why is nightbat so obsessed with her?
nightbat claims to be madly in love with one of the "Seans", namely "Silouen" or "Sil". His public professions of this love have come to be termed "kookgasms".

Q: Who are the rest of the saucerheads?
G=EMC^2 Glazier - Probably the least coherent of the saucerheads. Using WebTV, Bert is unable or unwilling to quote and attribute posts he replies to. Every post consists of a single paragraph of rambling thoughts and disjointed ideas. His posts regularly contain wild musings and kooky ideas about science, and also believes he is deserving of a Nobel prize for his space-shattering "equation". A small sample of his screed... also known as Bert, or TreBert, or Beert, or ...
Greysky - This poster (mostly retired) is enamored with the idea that faster-than-lightspeed communications are possible with quantum entanglement. Dismisses anyone who disputes his ideas, and has a website dedicated to his technological developments: www.allocations.cc
Bill Sheppard - Another WebTVer. Proponent of the "flowing-space theory", dismisses anyone and anything that doesn't fit his preconceived notions. Sheppard was regularly spanked by some of the professional astronomers.
Double-A - A dedicated devotee of the rest of the saucerheads and of the nightbat's "officer" hierarchy. Will tolerate just about anything, with the exception of anyone who disputes saucerhead claims.
BEE - Occasional poster, this subject has not been studied extensively.
Painius - Another proponent of "flowing-space", and also dismisses any challenge that doesn't fit preconceived notions. Believes quantum mechanics isn't real science because it doesn't work the way his intuition tells him it should. When his ideas are challenged, responds with ad hominems attacks and lames. Refuses to educate himself. Has been known to attack other posters with ultimatums and lamefests. Has a website: home.att.net/~Paine_Ellsworth
Warhol - (aka "warswine" or "warhog") Usenet messiah (see Ray Karczewski, Sollog, S.P. Vanier, Azure, etc. ad nauseum). Spiritual advisor for alt.astronomy. Another refuge welcomed into the saucerhead fold (from alt.prophecies.nostradamus), he is by far the most accomplished screed artist. Regularly pronounces doom in the form of hellfire and falling asteroids ("Astroides" in Warhol-speak) onto those that dare to laugh at his illucidity.
Warhol believes he is some kind of Moorish king and military leader, as well as the son of his "Gran'da'dy" (God Almighty, apparently). Dumps Islam, Christianity, Judiaism, mythology, Dark and Middle Ages history into a blender, turns the switch to "puree", and spews the results to usenet. Believes that Saddam Hussain should be returned to power in Iraq. Claims that a comet ("Cometh" in Warhol-speak) called Wormwood will bring doom in 2012. These pronouncements of doom are approved and reinterpreted by nightbat as more evidence of the need for the "Seans" to arrive and cart the saucerheads off to intergalactic bliss. Typical warswine screed, in toto.
Honest John - Won no less than five kook awards in a single month. A refugee from alt.horology, where he was run out of town on a rail for questionable business deals involving clocks and watches. Not really into the UFO scene, he apparently views the other saucerheads as a refuge from the evil kookologists who pinned those kook awards to his chest. Claims to have an IQ of 150, claims to be a Christian; both of these claims are dubious in light of his Usenet posting history. The most accomplished lamer in the saucerhead war chest. Currently is a rising star in the saucerhead hierarchy, and currently has a 24-hour per day obsession with a certain Kookologist.
Charles D. Bohne, a.k.a. "Chuckweasel" - An "old soul" Pleiadian from the planet "Manda" who could be the subject of an entire FAQ by himself. A few Charles-related links:

Q: Have the "Saucerheads of Alt. Astronomy" collectively won any kook awards (as a group)?
As a group , the Saucerheads of Alt.Astronomy have won one collective kook awards -
